She was born to Paul and Ellie Phelps on September 15, 1923 in Union Point, Georgia. On August 15,
1942, Sara married Cecil Goodwin Callaway who died in Italy during World War II on May 30, 1944. She
later married Fred Goodwin Moon, the father of their four children, on September 27, 1946. He passed
away on September 15, 1975.
She was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church and then a charter member of Covenant
Church United Methodist, where she was a cherished member of the Whitlock Fellowship Sunday
School Class, Circle #1 of the United Methodist Women, and a member of O.W.L.S. senior lunch group.
She was a loving mother and wonderful homemaker.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents, her eight siblings (Ruby McKinley, Claude Phelps, Florence
Phelps, Bob Phelps, Nell Finch, Bennie Phelps, Fred Phelps, and Louise Moody), and her son-in-law,
Steve Burton. She is survived by her children: Beverly Moon Burton, Perry Fred Moon and wife Lyn,
Jimmy Paul Moon and wife Janice, and Barbara Moon Nichols and husband Max; her grandchildren:
Jennifer Lynn Burton and fiancé Sam Markle, Carly Elaine Moon, Ashley Moon Lowe and husband Jason,
and Lindsey Moon Lawson and husband Jason; and great-grandchildren: Savannah, Seth and Summer
Lowe and Oliver and Amos Lawson and extended family, Tyler and Zoiey Markle.
Sechrest Funeral Home at 1301 East Lexington Avenue, High Point, NC is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be Friday, July 15, 2016, at Sechrest from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral service begins at
1:00 p.m. in Sechrest Chapel. Burial will follow at Floral Garden Park Cemetery in High Point.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Church United Methodist, for debt
retirement, 1526 Skeet Club Road, High Point, NC 27265 or to Hospice Home at High Point, 1803
