Virginia was born on December 18, 1929 in Galivants Ferry, Horry County, South Carolina to the late Harrison Martin and Fannie Edwards Martin.Virginia was raised on her parent’s tobacco farm in Horry County, SC, riding horses bareback, milking cows, swimming in the river, planting tobacco, working in the garden, and helping her Mama sew clothes and can goods for winter. She loved to tell stories of her childhood and the mischief that she and her siblings would get into and then she’d tell you that she was spoiled and mean as a child and she got that honest from her Daddy. She’d let out a big cackle (laugh) when she’d tell some of her stories and that laugh is one that will never be forgotten by anyone who knew her. Virginia may have not realized how much she was also like her Mama, strong, loving, very soft hearted, and never afraid to show that love to her children, grandchildren and extended family and friends. She always left you with a hug and an “I love you”.
She was employed at Alma Desk for many years until she retired early to take care of her husband and father to her four daughters, Ralph. Virginia was of the Baptist faith and loved to listen to old-time gospel music. She loved to sing and dance, put puzzles together, read books, and color. But most of all, she loved family gatherings with all of her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.
She was predeceased by husbands, Ralph Elliott and Lespie Loflin and a daughter, Alfreida Elliott Hill; her siblings: John “JB” Martin, Luther Martin, Albert Martin Johnson, Clifton “Buddy” Martin, and Juanita Martin-Rabon-Mole.
Virginia is survived by her three daughters: Sylvia Chandler (Randle), Geneva Phillips, and Gornita Lester (Ron); grandchildren: James Cress Jr, Christy Cress-Wolford, Danita Carter, Dana Carter, Robert Phillips Jr, David Carter Jr, and Vicki Hill-Greenwood; sister-In-law, Lottie Martin; brother-In-law Horace Elliott (Virginia) who was more like a son to her; 11 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
Virginia was the last of her siblings to go and what a wonderful gift it must have been for her Mama on Mother’s Day, when Virginia finally breathed her last breath, and her Mama was there with her siblings to welcome her home.
