Carissimi cugini la mancanza di una madre porta molto dispiacere a non averla piu con noi. Ma i riccordi che ci lasciano  sono molto preziosi.

Our sincere and affectionate condolences to Assunta, Sandy and all the family. We will remember our aunt as being a  kind gentle woman. May the light of our Lord shine upon her always.

Colomba Padula, our nonna and the matriarch of our family, passed yesterday at the age of 99.  Nonna was a strong, hard-working woman with a generous heart and kind smile.  No one messed with the “daughter of Isidoro” as my mom would say.  When our grandfather, “Nonno”, left for Canada in search of a better life for his family, Nonna continued to maintain the family’s land in Italy, the household, and most importantly, raised her children on her own until the entire family reunited almost 10 years later.  Her passing is a reminder that the oldest generations of immigrants who sacrificed so much so their children could have a better life on the other side of the world.  

If Nonna welcomed you into her house, you weren't leaving until you were full from a complete home-cooked meal, sipped a cup of espresso and enjoyed a cookie.  I loved visiting when she made spaghetti from scratch and her sauce was simmering on the stove as the aroma permeated the whole house.  I will never forget how she was everyone's "Nonna" when they visited.  

Nonna suffered from a slowly-progressive dementia in her last decades of life.  She gradually lost her ability to speak and mobility but she always smiled and often laughed when interacting with her great-grandchildren and animals.  She loved sitting by the window and enjoying natural scenery.  As her caretaker, my mom was excellent at preparing the best meals for Nonna at every stage of her illness, caring for her basic needs with the highest level of respect and dignity and even consistently engaging Nonna so that she could respond in her own way.    This is also a tribute to our mother for going above and beyond in showing us the greatest love one could show a parent.  Nonna would be so proud and probably would have thanked her if she could.  Nonna, my mother and father taught us the most valuable lesson in life without even intending to or knowing it: love and care for those around you, for then you will know true respect.
