

Gary Leon Melton, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away on January 19, 2026, in Commerce Township, Michigan, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and faith. Born on September 23, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Gary's life was marked by dedication to his family, his work, and his passions. A devoted husband of 59 years to his late wife Norma and father to Mike (Paula), Jim (Tammy), Paul (Colleen), and David. Grandfather to Mark (April), Michele (Dave), Joey (Andrea), Jennifer (Craig), Andrew (Leyla), and Samantha (Kevin). Great grandfather of 12. Gary also leaves behind numerous family members and friends who will miss his warm spirit dearly.
Gary retired from the Rouge steel plant after 37 years of service as a pipe fitter and a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW). He spent most of his retirement years in Crossville Tennessee where he enjoyed gardening, wine making, camping with friends, being a member of the local tractor club and actively participating in the local church. He then returned to Michigan where he joined the Westlake community and could be found singing while making new friends. His humor and personality brought smiles and fond memories to everyone.
Gary’s family will receive friends on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Elton Black & Son Funeral Home located at 3295 E. Highland Road, Highland, Michigan 48356.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the Elton black & Son Funeral Home. Additional visitation will take place from 11:00 AM until time of funeral service at 12:00 PM.
Interment will take place in White Lake Cemetery, White Lake, Michigan.
Memorial contributions in Gary’s memory may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
