Mary was born on November 5, 1942, in Grand Rapids, MI, to John and Minnie (Timmer) Gommers. Mary was a longtime member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Holland. She pursued her love of learning through higher education. She received her bachelor’s degree in Education from Calvin College and went on to earn a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Michigan. Mary cherished spending time with her only grandson, Bennett. Together they enjoyed countless hours going on nature walks, visiting the library, and attending band concerts. One of her greatest joys was sharing the love of music with him, especially their bond through the French horn, which both played. Mary also enjoyed playing her French horn in the American Legion Band. A true lover of the outdoors, Mary found beauty in nature and especially in birds. She was a proud member of the Audubon Society and spent many happy days birdwatching. At home, she delighted in feeding the neighborhood birds that visited her feeders each year. Mary was deeply involved with La Leche League for 25 years, where she offered encouragement and support to many new mothers and families. Mary will be deeply missed by many.
