Aunty Gloria was as close to my mother, Dolly Bulkan, as were her sisters. Our families were intertwined during the years we lived in Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice. Aunty Glor and Uncle Riley lived upstairs, and Aunty Glare and Uncle Harold downstairs, in their Wire Dam house. Our house was close by, just off the middle dam of the village. We children played together, and considered their Wire Dam homes as an extension of ours. Aunty Glor was my first teacher in Prep A. She and Uncle Riley delighted in recounting stories of our early years, stories of Mummy’s anxious parenting, for example, that I hold close and will always treasure. On one occasion, when they moved over to look after us for a few days while our parents had to go somewhere, Aunty Glor was amused at the forms of greeting we used – “Good morning Uncle Riley, assalamwaalikum Aunty Gloria” – which were how we addressed our parents. Our bonds extended to Aunty Daphne and Uncle Wilfred who also lived in Bush Lot – who embraced us as their extended family.
Aunty Glor was a steady and beloved presence in my life – as we moved around the coast, occasioned by Daddy’s teaching transfers, and as she and Uncle Riley moved: from Bush Lot to Fort Wellington, to New Amsterdam, then D’Andrade Street in Georgetown, and finally to Happy Acres, before they emigrated from Guyana to Mankato, then to Florida. Throughout those moves, our families tried to stay close, in spite of the ever-enlarging spaces that separated us. 
Aunty Glor was a master chef, I hope Phyllis and Kaye have kept her recipes. I have a memory of watching her swim in the Wire Dam trench, in a long-gone time when that trench was fast flowing and clean. I will remember always Aunty Glor’s distinctive voice, her smile and embrace of me, of us all. I can close my eyes and hear Aunty Gloria’s voice greeting our Mom as “Sister Dolly”. Aunty Glare also addresses Mummy that way.  I miss you very much, Aunty Glor. I treasure my memories of you.

A Glor held a special place in my heart and I loved her dearly. She was warm and loving and generous. In my early years, I spent many days of my school holidays with A Glor, U Riley, Jer, Andy and Phyl and have fond memories of my time there. My one regret is that I was terrified of dogs at that age and missed playing with Ruff. 
Even as an adult, out of deep affection for A Glor, I made a point of visiting her in all her various homes in the US, from Mankato to Miami to Fort Lauderdale. 

I will miss A Glor and her regular calls to me. She made me feel loved. 

My deepest sympathy Jer, Andy, Kay, Phyl and the grands. Much love from Annette and family.

Dear Jerry, Andy, Phyl and Kay,

Orin and I send our deepest condolences to you all, and to the three grand-sons. 

Aunty Glor and I shared many, many conversations over the years as we spoke three to four times a week. Sometimes she would call just to check in on Orin and me, and to let me know that she loves me. We would share stories of her in her younger years, her relationship with, and memories of Mummy. We laughed a lot, vented about stuff. Most times, she would say ' that's all the news from my corner of the world, love you Sandy.' We shared funny stories of our fur-baby Blue and her grand-dog - Eldo.  We always ended our chats with 'love you'. 

Even though it has been a number of years since we haven't seen each other in person, our connection has always been strong and I will treasure those memories always. 

I am sorry that I can't be there in person  for the celebration of her life, please know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Jerry, Andy n Kay & Phyllis, much if my childhood was spent in Bush Lot, your Mum was a part of the memories of that time, someone of quiet dignity, dependable  and much respected. We all loved her, and though will be missed will be a cherished memory.
