Joan Bruening, 92, died peacefully on August 31, 2018 at her home in bed in Plantation, Florida, after a brief struggle with cancer. Joan was born on June 23, 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Nicholas and Maggie (Hamilton) Weisman. Joan was very proud to have a father who was born in the Banat region and a mother who was born in Scotland.
Joan grew up on Midvale Avenue in Cleveland and graduated from John Marshall High School where she sold war bonds and joined the Civil Air Patrol. She then went on to work for the Federal Reserve Bank in the war bond department. On October 26, 1946, she married Clyde Henry Bruening and started a family in Avon Lake, Ohio. In 1957 the family relocated to the Ft. Lauderdale area into a house she has lived in for 61 years.
Joan's work career in Florida included many years as a clerk for the Broward County Welfare Department at Port Everglades and at Broward General Hospital in Radiology's Film Library.
Joan was full of life and enjoyed many activities including playing the accordian ( favorite song to play was Elmer's Tune), fishing, boating, camping, playing horseshoes (she was a South Florida Senior Games Gold Medal winner from 1994-1996), doing crossword puzzles, doing David Hoyt's TV Jumbles and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Joan is survived by her brother Bob (Diane) Weisman, daughters Susan (Bob) Bland, and Linda (Brian) Newman, and sons Clague (Angela) and Cliff (Joyce) along with many grand-children, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Joan is pre-deceased by her husband, Clyde, her twin sister June, sister Suzanne, and brothers Hugh and Dick. Sadly, Joan also lost her son, Clark, last year.
In lieau of flowers, Joan would rather have everyone raise a mug of beer in a toast to her memory. Also, you could kiss a frog, which was Joan's favorite animal.
