

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana on February 24, 1935, daughter of Virgil M. and Thelma Anna (Hearn) Hughes. Mary was raised in Terre Haute, graduated from Indiana Teacher's College with a B.F.A. degree in Music and later from Indiana University with a Master's Degree in Education.
Mary moved to South Florida from Terre Haute in 1964, where she began her long teaching career, retiring in 1998. Her first position was a Guidance Counselor and Director at New River Junior High School in the 1960's, taught at McArthur High School in the 1970's and retired from South Broward High School in 1998.
She enjoyed deep sea fishing, camping, coin collecting, photography (nature scenes) and music. She was a longtime member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Hollywood
and a member of the Priscilla Circle. Mary loved her dogs and raised Poodles and Labrador Retrievers (3 litters), volunteered at Memorial Hospital and served on the Board at Five Star Residence since 2016.
Survived by her son Robert E. and his wife Dale Benson, grandson, Steven T. Benson and several nieces and nephews. In additions to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara H. Burdett and brother, Rev. James R. Hughes.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Mary's Life will be held on Saturday, November 10th at 7:00 P.M. at St. Andrews Park Road Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Road, Hollywood. Pastor Gordon Woolard will officiate. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
Following cremation, Mary will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute, Indiana.
