

Raymond Merritt Mathews, M.D., 68, of Cooper City, Florida passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family in the early morning hours of October 28, 2023. Raymond was born in New Haven, Connecticut to Raymond Sr. and Norma (Hedges) Mathews. Ray was a distinguished obstetrician and gynecologist, who was not only a dedicated medical professional but also a compassionate and caring soul who touched the lives of countless patients, colleagues, and friends. Graduating from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1992 and completing his residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa in 1996, “Dr. M.” soon gained recognition for his unwavering commitment to women's health, and his comforting presence, which he shared with his patients in private practice in Pembroke Pines, Florida for nearly 20 years. He was a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength for those who entrusted him with their care.
Ray was dedicated to the field of obstetrics and gynecology, where he nurtured the dreams of expectant mothers, supported those facing medical challenges, and provided essential guidance to women throughout their life journeys. His patients often spoke of his profound empathy and a rare ability to put people at ease during some of life's most vulnerable moments.
Raymond M. Mathews is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Joann (Bracale) Mathews, and his devoted children and their families: Elisa (Eric) LuBan and Raymond E. (Samuel Acosta) Mathews, M.D. His grandchildren, who were a source of joy in his life: Mason and Josephine LuBan. His siblings, whom he loved dearly: Deborah Kraft, Kenneth (Eileen Schreck) Mathews, Bridget (Joseph) Larocque and sister-in-law, Rita (Bracale) Smith. He was blessed with 8 nieces and nephews, who have grown to create families of their own, and he truly enjoyed spending time with all.
Ray is pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Patrick Mathews, and his brothers-in-law Gary Smith and Edward Kraft.
