Sylvia Carpenter Ryan

Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and currently residing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Sylvia passed away Friday, March 17, 2017 at the age of 83. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Erica J. Carpenter; one niece, Laurie Carpenter Duchmann and her husband, Larry of Baton Rouge; one nephew, Kenneth J. Carpenter and wife, Chace of Nashville, TN; and five great-nieces and great-nephews, Ally Randall, Jackson Randall and Alex Duchmann of Baton Rouge, and Ryan Carpenter and Elizabeth Carpenter of Nashville. Additionally, Sylvia is survived by four step-children, James Ryan, Richard Ryan, and Linda Ryan Kagle (her husband Bill) of Ft. Lauderdale and Michael Ryan (his wife Tia) of Alabaster, AL. She is also survived by three granddaughters Coleen Mahoney, Lindsay Ryan, Ashley Ryan and one great-granddaughter Ryann Mahoney.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her loving husband of 36 years, Francis "Frank" Ryan. She was also preceded in death by her adoring brother David Reamy Carpenter.

Visitation will be at Fred Hunter Funeral Home, 718 S. Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, from 11 am until 12 pm on Saturday, April 1, 2017. Burial will follow in Lauderdale Memorial Park, Fort Lauderdale, at 12:30 pm.

Sylvia was Methodist, loved vacationing, and had a passion for reading. With her previous nursing skills she also loved volunteering at Hospice, visiting patients in their homes to help out, reading to them, and lifting their spirits. She was always very active. Her love and passion for dogs attracted her to volunteering at an obedience training club for many years (Tailwaggers Learning Center of WPB, FL). Her loving and caring personality made her many longtime friends in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana, whom she visited often and cherished them all. The family sincerely thanks caregiver Michelle Cobb for her compassion, faithfulness and skilled assistance, and to Michelle's husband, Colin Cobb, for his friendship.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your local Humane Society in Sylvia's name.
