Euology for Theresa Daniel by Andrea Bernadine DanielMy mother, Theresa Daniel was born on September 10, 1930 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. Her mother was Venezuelan born who came to Trinidad as a young girl and married her father who was of French and Chinese descent. My mother was raised by her paternal grand-mother who was a very strict disciplinarian and who believed strongly in the Roman Catholic religion. Her grand-father, Jacques Flament loved her very much. She said when he went on trips to France he always brought her back a present but the one she loved the most was a porcelain Shirley Temple doll. She said that one day she was playing with the doll and had it on her lap while she was on a swing rocking back and forth and the doll fell and broke. She rushed to her grand-father and said "grand-pa the dolly died." He said, "don't worry Theresa, I will bring you another one on my next trip." She said she broke at least two and each time he would replace them. She attended St. Roses Girls Catholic School. She would often tell me stories of how the war in Europe affected Trinidad in those days and how she had to do drills and practice hiding out in the basement of the school in case of an invasion from Germany. Yes, even Trinidad was affected by the war and she told me food was scarce and ration cards were given to families. My mother loved school and she loved to read. She proudly told me one day that when she was eleven years old she won first prize for being the student that read the best in her class. She would often say to me if you can read and write no one can take advantage of you. My mother loved poetry, hymns, the songs of Ray Charles, Jim Reeves and Marc Anthony. She was a shy woman but sentimental in nature. She use to say if someone gives you something it does not matter how much it costs you should appreciate it and keep it. She had a box filled with every card she received from her children, friends and family for birthdays and special holidays.My mother came to Brooklyn, New York in February, 1976. For a time she could not adjust to the weather. Later on she went to school and became a certified nursing assistant and was very proud of this accomplishment. She was fifty years old. She worked in this field for approximately ten years. In 1993 my mother moved to Hollywood, Florida with my father. My mother played a major role in all her children's lives. She was always there for us. She was proud of my sister, Ingrid who won many trophies in high school for Volley ball and who got a scholarship to attend Pace University in New York City. She was proud of my sister, Jennifer who first became a dental assistant and then decided to go into patient care at Woodhull Hospital and Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn. She was proud of my brother Curtis, who works for New York City Transit and who never gave her any cause to worry. He never got into trouble of any kind especially the ones that plague the young generation in our society today. She was also proud that we had a teacher in the family. My younger sister Esther is an elementary school teacher in Trinidad and sadly, could not be here today. My mother use to say I am a lucky woman, I have good children. Not one of my children gives me a cause to worry. Yes, I am indeed a lucky woman. She was an excellent mother and wife. My father and her had few disagreements. She believed in making your marriage work and letting go of the past. She was extremely forgiving. She disliked quarreling, discontent and gossip. Her siblings jokingly called her the "FBI" because she was capable of keeping a confident. My mother was shy and introverted but she possessed a quiet dignity and she had class. When someone was being dishonest with her, she would say "do not let these small, beady eyes fool you, they see and absorb everything."My mother came from a very large family of ten, two brothers are deceased. She is survived by her brothers, John, Lenny, Frankie, Raymond and her sisters Julie, Barbara and Elaine. She was especially close to her brothers John and Lenny. Her brother John was always there for her and her children. When she was still able to walk, she visited him and his wife, Yvette many weekends at his home in Fort. Lauderdale. John was more than a brother, he was a dear friend. She said because they looked so much alike, when they were children people called them the "bopsy twins". She was also very close to her brother Lenny, a retired lawyer who lives in England. He visited her last year and she sat straight up in bed with a big smile on her face, even though at the time she no longer walked and could not get out of bed. That was the most I had seen her smile in quite some time. The mere mention of his name brought a smile to her face. Thank you for that uncle Lenny.My mother was very loved by her family. My mother will be missed by her husband, children and siblings. We all love you very much and we know you are in heaven with your mother, father, two brothers, your first son and your first grand-son. Rest in peace, mama.

Miss Theresa, also known as Grams. She liked that nickname and would laugh when I said it, she even knew which cartoon I borrowed the name from when I was a little girl. She would let me dump the pennies out of her piggy bank and count them on her bed, and play with all the trinkets and makeup on her dresser. I came to visit her once as an adult and stayed only half an hour, as I walked to the door she said "ya come for a stick of fire?". I love those things she used to say and I could tell that she liked saying them to me knowing I would ask her to explain the meanings. She was very good to my brother and I. I love my Grams.

My fondest memories of my mom were Christmastime in New York. She always made sure she had the house decorated and had gifts for everyone under the tree. I remember one Christmas eve it was snowing and she wanted to go shopping for a gift for someone, she was very persistent and ask me to go with her, so of course I went with her. We ended up going from store to store until we found just the right gift and she never complained or gave up because of the weather. When she was finally pleased with what she had bought she said okay we can go home now. Momzello, was my little nickname for her, and she called me "In" shortening my name with so much love in her voice. Words can not express how much I will miss her laughter and all the little silly sayings she said. So until the day we are together once more. Love Always, your daughter Ingrid

I have several fond memories of my mother. She always laughed at my jokes until she was red in the face with tears of joy streaming down her face. I was so proud of myself when I made her laugh like that. She used to call me "Berns" at those times. She called me "Bernie" not Andrea which is the short form of my middle name Bernadine. Someone once said you know if someone loves you by the way they say your name. This is true. My mother loved to read, she loved poetry and art. She would often give me little books of poems, some religious in nature which I loved.
