BUTERA, ANNE IRENE Anne Irene Butera, 94, died June 15, 2012, after a long and amazing life. She was born January 29, 1918 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Antonio & Cesara Mariani. Her family moved to Birmingham, where she graduated from Woodlawn High School. She was a brilliant student of music and loved to practice and play the violin. She married Frank Butera in February of 1939, and they had their only child, Rosalie. She lost her husband in 1966 and has been a widow ever since. Anne was beautiful, inside and out, with bright green eyes and a warm and ready smile. She spent her whole life working to give her family and her granddaughters the things she could never have. For 35 years, she was the center cashier at Park Lane Supermarket, where she treated generations of children to candy and bubble gum. After Park Lane closed, she worked at Browdy's Restaurant until she was 88 years of age. There, she kept up with many of the children who had grown up with Park Lane, and even some of their children. She was always so generous, especially with her time. She made many friends during the course of her life, most of which she still kept up with. Anne is survived by her daughter, Rosalie Woods, and her granddaughters Lisa Woods and Cynthia Woods, all of whom she called her "children." She is also survived by many good friends, including Forrest Edwards and Margaret Swain, Marilyn Leonard and Betsy McKay, whom she called her "clan." She is blessed to be survived by so many friends who will cherish her memory. She is preceded in death by her son in law, Charles Woods, whom she loved like he was her own. She is also predeceased by her parents in law, Joe and Rose Butera, whom she loved like her own parents. Grandma Anne was a beautiful lady, a wonderful grandma and a true character in every sense of the word. She will be loved and missed by those who knew her and loved her so much. Anne's family would like to thank all of those good friends she made at Mount Royal Towers, especially Sharon, Denise and Leigh, and her sitter, Sheila Sanders. We would also like to thank the angels from hospice who were so kind and caring in her last days. Anne was a life long member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. The family will receive friends there at Our Lady of Sorrows from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012. This visitation will be followed by a funeral mass to begin at 11:00 a. m. Lunch in Grandma Anne's honor will follow in the Family Life Center. Ridouts Valley Chapel directing. >>
