Anne Knight Townsend

Anne Knight Townsend passed away peacefully on May 21, 2016 at the age of 71 with her family by her side. A lifelong resident of Birmingham, Mrs. Townsend was the daughter of the late Helen McTyeire Knight and Roy Woodson Knight. Born July 9, 1944 in Birmingham, she was educated at Crestline Elementary School, Brookhill School (Altamont), Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, and the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Mrs. Townsend was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to so many in Mountain Brook and provided many years of community service as a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, the Birmingham Zoo and the Botanical Gardens. She loved to travel and loved animals and was an avid supporter of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society and the Best Friends Animal Society. She was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church, the Ballet Guild of Birmingham, the Redstone Club and Snippers Garden Club. Survivors include her loving husband, Shepherd Vincent Townsend, Jr.; children William Knight Holbrook and Katherine Anne Holbrook Ostrander (Roger) of Gulf Breeze, Florida; grandchildren William Knight Holbrook, Jr., Caroline Ashcraft Holbrook, Anne Holbrook Ostrander, Daly Elizabeth Ostrander and Roger Vincent Ostrander IV; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and many loving pets and in particular her beloved dog Rambo. William Knight Holbrook, Jr., Roger Vincent Ostrander III, William Walter McTyeire III, Thomas Low Krebs, Christopher Michael Krebs and David Burke Heslop will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society, 300 Snow Drive, Birmingham, Alabama 35209, online at gbhs.org; or Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, Utah 84741, online at bestfriends.org. A memorial service will be held at Independent Presbyterian Church, 3100 Highland Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, preceded by a visitation at 10:00 a.m. A private family graveside service will follow
