She attended Edgewood Elementary, Phillips High School and graduated from RAMSAY High School in the class of 1948 (and was quick to correct anyone who misspelled RAMSAY!) and attended Auburn University. She met her husband Don on a blind date. They lived in Chicago while Don completed medical school and Residency, then moved back to Birmingham
She was a member of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church where she served in many ways, including a member of the Vestry, President of Women of the Church, Directress of the Altar Guild, Weddings, St. Martha’s Guild, assisted in creating the Mother’s Day Out program and was later the director, and a member of The Searchers. She was a member of Belle Meade and Hill N’ Dale Garden Clubs and The Country Club of Birmingham. She was a Past Active of The Service Guild, Silhouettes, Coronets, and Ballerina Dance Clubs and La Lumiere Literary Club. She was active in Mountain Brook PTA, having served as President of Mountain Brook Junior High and Cherokee Bend Elementary PTAs.
Anne loved dancing, never met a stranger, and had the gift of conversation and entertaining. She was an avid knitter and loved playing bridge. She loved being active and involved with her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, and any committee or project, which usually led to her being in charge. As her dementia progressed, the family is thankful for everyone that listened to her stories and stepped up to dance with her anytime she heard the music playing.
In the words of her great granddaughter, “You cannot listen to music while trying to go to sleep, because you would just want to get up and dance”.
“It is with your feet that you move, it is with your heart that you dance. “
The Family would like to thank Founders Place Respite Program at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church for bringing joy and laughter to her later years, as well as an opportunity to dance.
We send our thanks to all the friends and staff at Kirkwood that hugged and loved on Anne (Their ‘Auntie’ as they called her) and provided a caring environment for her.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, May 13, 11:00 am at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Birmingham, AL. 35213, with a Reception to follow. Please come celebrate Anne with colorful attire!
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Founders Place Respite Program, Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Birmingham, AL 35213
