

BLAND, BETTY CHAPMAN Betty Chapman Bland, born February 2, 1941, died Friday, February, 24 from many complications following a head injury from a fall on January 1, 2012. Betty is the daughter of Sam and Annie Chapman of Tuscumbia, Alabama. She graduated from Deshler High School in Tuscumbia in 1958 and then received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Birmingham Southern College in 1962 where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. She taught English at Berry High School in Hoover, Alabama for two years. Betty met John Jackson "Buddy" Bland of Florence, Alabama and they were married June 27, 1963 and celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary last June. He was attending the University of Alabama School of Dentistry at that time and upon graduation served as a dentist in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps at Parris Island, S.C. at which time they lived in Beaufort, S.C. They moved to Birmingham, Alabama in 1967, living there to the present. Betty and Buddy were members of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Homewood, Alabama. Betty was a founding member of the Birmingham Calligraphy Guild which she and several other calligraphers organized in 1987/ Betty was also a gifted watercolor artist and her work was characterized by delicate detail which reflected her life and personality. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Annie Chapman and also by her brother, Joe, who was killed while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Betty was 2 years old at the time of her brother's death. Betty was the mother of Dr. Lisa Elizabeth Bland of Bayonne, N.J. and Karen Christina "Christy" Faulk, and grandmother of Melissa Anne Faulk and Emily Elise Faulk. Visitation with Betty's family will be Sunday, February 26 from 6:30 - 8:00 at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Homewood, Alabama and the memorial service for Betty will be Monday, February 27 at 10:00, also at All Saints' Episcopal Church. There will be a private burial in the church garden at a later date. Betty requested that memorials be made as a donation to The Humane Society or All Saints' Episcopal Church in lieu of flowers.
