David Winn Stephenson, 46, a resident of Mountain Brook, Alabama, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, January 5, 2023, after a brief series of heath challenges. David was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend who was known for his calm demeanor, sense of humor and quick wit – traits which also made him an exceptional real estate lawyer. He was selfless with his time, eager to help others and will be deeply missed.
David grew up in Huntsville and Birmingham and attended Birmingham Southern College where he studied finance and was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. After college, David received his JD, cum laude, from the Duke University School of Law in 2001 and started his career with the law firm of Hill, Ward and Henderson in Tampa, Florida. David and his wife, Mary Margaret, returned to Birmingham in 2004 to start their family. After a brief stint with the Walston Wells firm, David became a partner with Bradley where he practiced until 2015, at which time he joined Encompass Health Corporation as an Associate General Counsel.
David was passionate about sports and always in the stands cheering for his boys, Robert and John. No matter the season, he always had a game on the tv and made sure his sons shared his passion for Blue Devil basketball. During the summers, David relished his time with Mary Margaret and his boys on Lake Martin and beach trips with extended family.
David demonstrated incredible courage and strength over the last weeks of his life and the family is grateful for the care given to him by the surgical ICU nurses at Grandview Hospital, Dr. Thompson and his team. He is survived by his wife Mary Margaret, sons Robert and John, parents Rusty and Connie Stephenson, brother Tod Dodgen (Melissa), three nephews (Harrison, Van and Drew) and one niece (Luci) all of whom adored him.
Funeral services will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Mountain Brook on Wednesday, January 11th at 2 p.m. CT, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s Harbor at Lake Martin.
