KRUSEN, DOROTHY GRAY HAYNES, age 91, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2018 after a long and full life. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama and is survived by her brother, Henry Bramlette Gray, III and his family; her three daughters, Dottie Haynes Miller, Betsy Haynes Dreher and Marsha Haynes Castro (Max Castro); her grandchildren, Shaun Flynn (Hayes), Carrie Fowler (Jason), Mackenzie Rodgers (Dave), Bert Martin (Mallory), Jake Dreher (Alexa), Lamar Miller (Annie) and Gray Miller; and eight great grandchildren who she adored. She is the daughter of the late Henry Bramlette Gray, Jr. and Dorothy Davis Gray, and the wife of the late Marshall Raymond Haynes, Jr., Ralph Patterson Moore, and William Andrew Krusen.
Dottie was among the first graduates of Brooke Hill High School in Birmingham. She attended Smith College where she earned Bachelor’s Degrees in English and Music, and served as a Director of the Alumnae Association. She was an Emeritus member of the Junior League of Birmingham, serving as President, a member of the Board of Directors, as well as in numerous leadership and fundraising roles. Her commitment and unfailing energy during the Junior League capital fund drive prompted the establishment of the Dottie Haynes Service Award in 1990. The award is given annually to a League member whose dedication serves as a measurement of service to the Junior League.
Dottie was honored to be a descendant of John Morton, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. She was also a descendent of Judge Mudd of the Arlington Antebellum Home. Her grandfather served as Lt. Governor of the State of Alabama. She was a civic-minded, dedicated citizen with endless volunteer duties which included membership and leadership roles in the following: Old Elyton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, Charity League Board, Alabama Foundation of Hearing and Speech Association, Women’s Committee of 100, Colonial Dames, Linley Heflin Scholarship Unit, American Association of University Women, Red Mountain Garden Club, Highlands Book Club, Gaities Dance Club, Maskers Dance Club, Birmingham Beautification Committee, Birmingham Museum of Art, and Birmingham Botanical Gardens. She was a member of the Country Club of Birmingham, Mountain Brook Country Club and The Club.
Dottie was a lifelong member of Independent Presbyterian Church. She was an avid international traveler. She lived many wonderful years in Tampa, Florida where she was a member of Tampa Presbyterian Church, Palma Cia Golf and Country Club, and a member of the Red Cross of Tampa Board of Directors.
Services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Independent Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Henry Edmunds Society, IPC Foundation, 3100 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, AL, 35205.
