

David Mitchell Comfort, age 93, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on August 29, in New Orleans, Louisiana during Hurricane Ida. David was born January 19, 1928 in Como, Mississippi. In earlier years, David lived in Durant, Mississippi. He graduated in 1948 from Mississippi State and was a member of Kappa Alpha social fraternity. David enrolled in medical school at Ole Miss and transferred to the University of Tennessee, graduating in 1951, where he was a member of Phi Chi medical fraternity. David began his medical career with an Internship at Norwood Hospital in 1951, and afterwards initially set up practice as a General Practitioner serving both Walker County and Praco, Alabama. In 1953, David entered the Naval School of Aviation Medicine and served three years as a Flight Surgeon in the US Navy First Marine Air Wing in Korea. He was later assigned to Sherman Jet Field, Pensacola Naval Air Station serving the Blue Angels and Jet Instructors Basic Training Unit. David returned to Birmingham in 1956 and entered Urology Residency at Carraway Methodist with completion in 1960. He continued to practice Urology at Norwood Clinic through 1985 and retired due to health reasons. He served as President of Staff to Carraway Methodist and was a member of numerous medical organizations: American Board of Urology, American Medical Association, Jefferson County Medical Society, Alabama State Medical Society. Birmingham Urological Society, Southeastern Section of Urology, and the American Urological Society.
David was a longtime resident of Birmingham and New Orleans. He was a member of Independent Presbyterian Church. David was also very active in the arts community and jointly received, with wife Gera, the 1979 Silver Bowl for the Arts. He was a member of Shades Valley Rotary Club and The Club. David served on the Summerfest Board of Directors and the Birmingham-Southern College Development Board. In New Orleans, David was active with the Vieux Carre Property Owners Board. Their home was open for many years during the Spring Fiesta Tour benefitting the French Quarter.
David was preceded in death by his wife Gera Brown Comfort. He is survived by the Comfort five daughters: Kaye, Cheryl, Becky, Angela, and Teresa; 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation at Ridout’s Valley Chapel (Oxmoor Road) will be Wednesday, September 8 from noon to 1:30pm. Graveside service will immediately follow at 2pm at Elmwood Cemetery.
