receiving his Bachelors (University of Alabama), Masters
(University of Alabama and the University of Illinois) and a PhD in Economics (University of Alabama). He began his teaching career in 1959 as a graduate assistant at the University of Illinois. From there he joined the army – was stationed in Germany – and while on leave in Copenhagen, Denmark – he met his wife of 54 years (Gery - a native of Holland). They were wed January 30, 1964 and returned to the states to complete his PhD; in 1968 joined Samford University – teaching Economics for 40 years. With his retirement in 2007 - he received a commendation from the Governor (Bob Riley) for his distinguished service “that is best reflected in the thousands of students he has taught, many of whom have gone on to successful business careers”.
After his retirement, in addition to spending more time with family and spoiling the six grandsons - Fred and Gery continued their globe-trotting travel – visiting and experiencing over 60 countries in his lifetime. By the grace of God he is saved and is now comfortably residing in Heaven!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred N Hendon, Sr.
(Father) and Louise Nicol Hendon (Mother). He is survived by his wife, Gery C. Hendon and brother, Frank Hendon (Regina Hendon - wife). His sons are Fred D. Hendon (Anne Hendon – wife); Erik N. Hendon (Kay Hendon – wife) and Chris J. Hendon (Stephanie Hendon – wife). Grandchildren are Justin Hendon, Matthew Hendon, Cameron Hendon, Wesley Hendon, Christopher Hendon and Riley Hendon.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018, 4:00 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church - 65 Old Montgomery Hwy,
Birmingham, AL 35209. The officiating minister will be Marty Crawford. A reception will follow the service at the church
