

Edward Russell Meadows, M.D. passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 100. Ed was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 28, 1923 to Minna Mundt and James Allen Meadows, Sr., M.D. He attended Zion Lutheran Parochial School, The Webb School (Bell Buckle, TN), and graduated from Ramsay High School. Ed received his Bachelor of Science degree from Tulane University and his medical degree from Tulane Medical School in 1946. He served his internship at the Jefferson-Hillman Hospital (Birmingham, AL). He began his training in radiology at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) and completed his residency at the Jefferson-Hillman Hospital. Dr. Meadows passed the American Board of Radiology in September of 1951 and entered the practice of radiology with a group of doctors including his father, Dr. James Allen Meadows, Sr., his brother, Dr. James Allen Meadows, Jr., and Dr. Karl Kesmodel, Jr. This practice was later known as Radiology Associates of Birmingham. He served as staff radiologist during his lifetime at St. Vincent’s Hospital, South Highlands Hospital, Brookwood Hospital, and Children’s of Alabama. He was Chief of Radiology at South Highlands Hospital and later at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Dr. Meadows worked in this practice until his retirement in July of 1989.
Dr. Meadows was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, Alabama State Medical Association, American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, and Birmingham Surgical Society. Dr. Meadows was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, served as a delegate to the American College of Radiology for a number of years, and served as the president of the Alabama Chapter. He was awarded the silver medal for his contributions to radiology by the Alabama Chapter, American College of Radiology.
Ed married Betty Ramsay Phillips in 1947 and was married for 55 years until her death in 2002. In 2005, he married Jane Rainer Jenkins and they were married for 16 years until her death in 2021. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his older brother (James Allen Meadows, Jr., M.D.), and younger sister (Margaret Meadows Denson). Dr. Meadows is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Prince Meadows and Sarah Meadows Chisolm (John), and stepchildren, Robert Thomas Jenkins, Jr. (Jane), Patricia Jenkins Noble (Andy), and Mary Bentley Jenkins Hammet (Beau). Surviving grandchildren are Elizabeth Walker Fry (Robert), Ryan Walker Graham (Jon), John Edward Walker, III (Kennedy), Lee Gilbert Chisolm (Rebecca), Charles Park Chisolm (Sara), and Martha Chisolm Brady (Jason). He is also survived by his fourteen great grandchildren who knew him fondly as “Ed”.
Ed was a nurturer by nature and took great pride in his practice of radiology, his patients, and spending time with friends and family. He was a member of the Country Club of Birmingham where he enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Rollers dogfight. He also loved fishing, dancing, Big Band and jazz music (that he acquired from his time in New Orleans), and spending time on the water with his family on the Coosa River and at Lake Martin.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, with visitation at 9:00 a.m. with the service to follow at 10:00 a.m. in the Nave.
