

2024 after having led a rich and wonderful life. He is predeceased by his parents,
Frederick Whittlesey Murray and Virginia Walker Murray. Fred was born on March 13,
1939, in Birmingham, Alabama. He led a charmed childhood filled with snake catching,
carousing with friends in his Forest Park neighborhood and summer camp at St. John’s
Academy in Delafield, Wisconsin. After attending Avondale Elementary School and
B.U.S., Fred graduated from Ramsay High School in 1957. He attended the University
of Virginia where he earned a degree in history. His years at UVA were a high point and
he maintained friendships with classmates throughout his life.
After college, Fred began a career in banking while earning his M.B.A. from Samford University.
He also served in the United States Coast Guard and in the Reserves for an additional six years.
In 1964 Fred married Elizabeth Allison Comer (Allison) with whom he raised three
daughters. Their almost sixty-year long marriage was filled with trips to the lake, the
beach and destinations all over the world. Fred was a fisherman, a gardener, an
excellent cook and an avid reader. A history enthusiast, he especially enjoyed tracing
the family genealogy. He had a long and successful career in banking and retired from
SouthTrust bank in 1998. Fred was known for his integrity, leadership, wisdom and
humor. In the community, Fred generously served many organizations and gave much
energy to the American Heart Association, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the
City of Mountain Brook. He was a member of Mountain Brook Club, Birmingham
Kiwanis Club, Beaux Arts Krewe, Redstone Club and St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands
Episcopal Church. Fred’s primary joy was his family. Everyone who loved him will miss
him tremendously.
Fred is survived by his wife, Allison, daughters, Allison Manley (Duncan), Virginia
Phillips (Will) and Elizabeth Marquez (Web) and by his grandchildren: Murray Manley
Hoffman (Deets), Duncan and Libba Manley, Henry and Walker Phillips and Thornhill
Marquez. Fred is also survived by his sisters, Virginia Creveling and Shirley Campbell
and by many nieces, nephews and their families and by his beloved dog Whitt. The
family is especially grateful for the superior care given by Dr. Preston Harrison and for
the excellent support provided by many caregivers, nurses and other medical
professionals.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 22 at 3pm at St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church, preceded by a visitation at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands Episcopal
Church, the American Heart Association, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens or a
favorite charity
