George William Edwards, Jr., celebrated his life of 93 years young with his wife, Mary Alice Samuels Edwards. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 4 children and their spouses: Bill Edwards (Nancy), Gail Edwards Palmer (Alan), Laurie Edwards Moses (John) all of Birmingham, AL, and Ann Edwards Colvard, of Columbus, GA, 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. They were his love and joy, especially in retirement. George's other passions were woodworking, fishing for" the big one" , singing with Apollo Boy's Choir, soloist in his church choir and the senior living choir group. He also enjoyed socializing with his friends and " going for a bite to eat."
George was born in 1927, to Rosa Phillips Edwards and George William Edwards, Sr., in Ensley, AL, where he lived with his family until moving to Vestavia Hills, AL. George was an Eagle Scout, graduate of Ensley High School, and Auburn University.
After his marriage in 1947 and graduation, he enlisted in the Navy during World War II. His engineering degree led him into commercial construction, with his first project being an addition to St. Vincent's Hospital. He later became the owner of Richardson Construction Company. His activity in the Association of General Contractors led him to being honored in the Alabama Construction Hall of Fame in 2002. George, also served as the President and Lifetime National Director of the AGC. He had membership in Kiwanis, Downtown Club, The Club, Birmingham First Presbyterian Church, Vestavia Methodist Church and served on many community committees. George, was a quiet, benevolent giver to many people he met and loved.
The family gives thanks and prayers to all his physicians, caregivers, at Hospice, Galleria Woods, including Aischa and Glenn. A special thank you to his longtime friends, Malcolm Miller, Bill Eubanks, Frank Albert, Swann Little and his Sunday School Class at Vestavia Hills Methodist, for their endearing friendship.
Because of the family's concern for health reason, there will be a private graveside burial, with a later Celebration of Life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your favorite charity or his granddaughter , Mary Liz Ingram's food fundraiser for the hungry at communitysharingtable.com .
