George William JACK BARTLETT of Mountain Brook, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019. He was preceded in death by his parents R. M. Bartlett and Hazel Anthony Bartlett; and his son, Jack Alan Bartlett. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Underwood Bartlett; his daughter, Lisa Bartlett McArdle (Walter); his grandson, Alan Bartlett McArdle; and his sister, Dorothy Bartlett Casteel. A long-time member of McElwain Baptist Church, he is currently a member of Brookwood Baptist. He attended Jefferson County High School and Howard College (now Samford University).
Mr. Bartlett served in the Army of the United States two times and was honorably discharged. He served during the Korean War in the Second Infantry Division. He was awarded Rifle M-1 Expert rating, Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, and Distinguished Unit Citation. In 2000, the 50th anniversary of the Korean War, The Korean Freedom League honored Korean War veterans with a medal. President Soon-Jik Yang came to Birmingham and made the metal presentations at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. Mr. Bartlett was very proud to receive this medal. Mr. Bartlett was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Kelly Ingram Post 668 in Birmingham., Alabama.
Mr. Bartlett was a top, award-winning automobile industry sales professional and manager. He was a member of Ford Motor Company 300-500 Club and was conferred their Master Sales Counselor distinction.
His favorite pastimes were target shooting, Alabama football, traveling, cooking, and chess. Alabama football was closely followed and greatly enjoyed. His travels included Europe, Mexico, Canada, numerous destinations in The United States particularly with many enjoyable trips to the Gulf Coast. His gourmet cooking was prized by his family and friends, especially his flaming bananas foster and bar-be-que ribs. Mr. Bartlett was a master chess player and enjoyed many pleasant hours checkmating his opponents.
His volunteerism included membership in Sertoma International through the Downtown Birmingham Sertoma Club. As President of his club, Mr. Bartlett received the Distinguished Club President award from Sertoma International. This award is Sertoma International’s highest award, for which he received a plaque and a Gold Coat honor in recognition of his achievements and leadership.
Mr. Bartlett was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be remembered for his kindness, friendliness, dapperness, warm smile, and easy-going gentleness. He was admired, greatly loved, and will be eternally missed.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday, December 17 at 12 noon with a memorial service at 1:00 p.m., Ridout’s Valley Chapel, 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, Alabama, 35209. Graveside service with military honors will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
