Peggy was born and reared in Birmingham and returned to Birmingham in 1989 with her husband, Ray. She graduated from Duke University earning her degree in English and also from Tulane University earning her Master's Degree in English.
Peggy was a longtime devoted member of Highlands United Methodist Church and a faithful member of the Upper Room Sunday School Class. She deeply appreciated the lessons brought each week by teachers, Bill Hairston and Janet Hughes. She particularly enjoyed the music of the church choir and her friend and Choirmaster, Rick Phillips.
A broken hip in 2017 and her age made her a severe fall risk, and the pandemic that followed changed her life to keep her homebound. Peggy was a delightful, gregarious, sweet, kind, soft-spoke, loving woman who loved the Lord. She was bright, intelligent, and well-educated, and was an avid lifelong student of the Bible. When she breathed her last breath here on earth, the gates of Heaven surely opened wide to welcome her among it's saints.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mildred Smith and by her husband of 50 years, Raymond H. Carey, who passed away in 2005. She is survived by her niece, Suzi (Tommy) of Tyler, Texas; and by her longtime friend and devoted live-in caretaker for 9 years, Dartland Dunbar.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, the 17th of June, at Elmwood Cemetery where Peggy will be laid to rest with her deceased husband, Ray.
Peggy would be pleased if you sent any memorial gift to the Choir Fund at Highlands United Methodist Church located at 1045 20th Street South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205 or to a charity or cause important to you.
Services are under the direction of Ridout's Valley Chapel (205-879-3401) in Homewood.
