It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Emogene Cochran Belcher. Jean, as everyone knew her, passed away peacefully and painlessly on July 4, 2018. She was the seventh of nine children, born on May 31, 1932 to Beeda and Hobert Cochran. For more than 86 years Jean was a beacon of light to most everyone she came into contact with. A woman of devout faith, Jean was never one afraid to express her opinion but she also never missed an opportunity to share a kind word or lend a helping hand. She was a devoted wife to the love of her life, Doug Belcher who preceded her in death in 2008. Jean and Doug placed their two children, Mark and Lera at the center of their lives. She was always involved and committed hers to making their lives everything they dreamed for. In addition to Doug, Jean was preceded in death by all of her siblings and parents, in-laws and several of Doug' siblings. She is survived by her loving children, her son Mark and his wife Amy and her daughter Lera McVey and her husband Rick. In addition to her children, Aunt Jean served as surrogate mom and favorite aunt to many nephews and nieces. Some have also passed away, but those remaining honor her with their personal memories and many wonderful times spent playing, gardening, swimming, cooking and learning at her heal. The family wishes to extend their most heartfelt appreciation to the many members of "Team Jean" that helped her to live life to the fullest all the way to the end. First, the family of Saints and Elders at St. Martin's in the Pines embraced Jean for nearly seven years and provided her a community of friends that gave her incredible joy and purpose. In her decline, the tenderness and care provided to not only Jean but to her family by Comfort Care Hospice is immeasurable. In particular, Suzanne Kilpatrick who was an incredible advocate and friend, helped Jean depart for paradise on her own terms and was a rock to the family throughout the experience. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood Alabama followed immediately by a reception for friends and family. As an expression of sympathy, the family asks that those who wish to celebrate Jean's life, do so through a contribution to St. Martin's in the Pines, 4941 Montevallo Rd, Birmingham, Al 35210.
