

Joanne was born Joanne Maxwell in 1938 in Rome, Georgia to parents Mildred and Clyde Maxwell. Joanne graduated from Shades Valley High School and went on to pursue a career as a commercial artist in the advertising industry. Joanne worked at Cook Publications as a graphic designer and later as a manager of print advertising. Joanne retired from advertising, returning several years later to work for Shoe Corporation of Birmingham where she worked until 2020.
Joanne married Robert Joe Anthony on June 1, 1963, Joanne and Robert met through James Calhoun, Robert’s Delta Chi fraternity brother and Mr. and Mrs. Anthony’s future brother-in-law. Joanne was an avid fan of any sport the University of Alabama may be participating in. She and her late husband Robert were often found in front of the television on game day where she upheld the various entertaining “good luck” rituals that she, herself invented. A collection of “Alabama Elephant” figurines that were placed on the coffee table in specific formations during every game will accompany Joanne in her burial.
Joanne is survived by her daughter, Cathy Anthony Borden and two grandchildren Kathryn and Robert, all of whom reside in Birmingham Alabama. Surviving siblings are Brenda Maxwell Calhoun and Diane Maxwell Stallings of Birmingham, Alabama. Additional surviving relatives include many nieces and nephews including Joanne’s beloved niece and nephew, Michelle Calhoun Finney and James Wesley Calhoun of Birmingham, Alabama. Joanne’s husband Robert, died in 2017.
Funeral Services for Joanne Maxwell Anthony will commence at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 25th of March, at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. Friends are cordially invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held privately for the family immediately following the service.
