John and Verna met in 1980 and were married in 1981. John worked for the Birmingham Water Works for 43 years. He held many positions within the company, starting as a pump operator and finished his career as telecommunications coordinator.
John was very active within the Caledonian Society, even becoming the president for several years.
He was a history buff and was an avid collector of vintage weaponry, books and movies. He also enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes and loved gardening. John served as “garden dad” at Cahaba Heights Elementary School for several years. He loved Alabama football. Roll Tide!
John is preceded in death by his father, Robin Bruce MacQueen and his mother Annie B Sharp.
He is survived by his wife, Verna S. MacQueen, his son Ian G. MacQueen (wife, Ashlyn) and their daughter, Evelynn, his sister Helen E. MacQueen, and his brother Thomas J. MacQueen.
Visitation will be held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel, Homewood Alabama, on Friday, December 29, 2023 from 10:00-11:00. Graveside services will be held afterward at 1:00 at Hopewell Cemetery in Hanceville, Alabama.
