Mary Angela Vacarella

Mary Angela Vacarella, 61, passed away on August 13, 2020. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Vincent Vacarella. Mary treasured childhood memories of visiting her grandparents on Sundays, playing with her many cousins, and enjoying her friends from the Glen Oaks neighborhood, St. Joseph's Elementary School and Fairfield and John Carroll High Schools. She graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School and earned a BS in Computer Science from UAB. She was employed at Southern Company until she was unable to work due to complications from cancer treatment. Since then, Mary often struggled with medical problems but was never one to let it keep her down. Instead, Mary trusted in the Lord, kept laughing, loved her family and friends and was truly the life of the party. Her laughter, big smile and forgiving heart will be missed.

Mary is survived by her mother Annie M. Campanotta; brother Joseph V. Vacarella, Jr (Tina); sister Theresa Schiller (Eric); nieces Anna Vacarella, Kristen Vacarella White (Dustin), Rachael Schiller Lorino (Sam), Mary Grace Schiller, Kate Schiller; nephews Joseph A. Vacarella, Christopher Schiller (Sara), Jake Schiller; great-nephews Braden Vacarella, Landon White and Carter Schiller. She appreciated the care of her doctor for many years, Dr. David Gettinger. The family is grateful for all the prayers from family and friends and for the recent care she received in the CCU and Palliative Care Unit at UAB Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10 am on August 19 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Homewood. Graveside Services following at Elmwood Cemetary, Birmingham. Ridout's Valley Chapel directing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Catholic Charities of Birmingham or to the American Cancer Society, Birmingham Chapter.
