Melvin was a proud Marine who served in the Pacific theater during WWII and was a patriotic veteran. Since his service, he was an active member of several veterans organizations.
Once stateside, Melvin received a degree from the University of Alabama’s business school and joined his family’s real estate business in Birmingham. Melvin was adored by all his customers. He was a life-long member and supporter of Temple Beth El and the Jewish Community Center.
He is preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Sally Olshan and brother Burt Olshan. Melvin is survived by his wife of 33 years Rochelle Bloomston Olshan, children Jeff Olshan (Heidi), Gary Olshan, Lindsay Raymond (Evan), as well as Marc Bloomston (Robin), Scott Bloomston (Jodi), Joel Bloomston (Janet), Barry Bloomston, Brett Bloomston (Marian), Peggy Klug (Isaac), Steve Spielberger (Susan), and Jeff Spielberger. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and a beautiful great granddaughter born within hours of his death. The funeral will be Friday March 16th at 1:00pm graveside at Elmwood Cemetery, visitation will be at Temple Beth El 2pm-4pm.
