Nancy was born on May 9th, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan and after 5 years in Detroit, moved to Decatur, Alabama. A proud graduate of Decatur High School in 1963, Nancy went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1967. Her professional life reflected her loyalty and work ethic as she dedicated 43 years to the mortgage banking industry. She began her career at Engel Mortgage, which later became part of AmSouth Bank and subsequently Regions Bank, where she retired in 2016 after decades of exemplary service and dedication. With grace, devotion and a quiet strength that touched all that knew her, Nancy lived a life defined by love, generosity and a steadfast dedication to family, friends and work.
In retirement, Nancy embraced life’s simple and joyful pleasures. She delighted in dining out and traveling with friends, sewing, gardening and spending treasured time with her adored furry grandpets Harry and Sally. She also loved cooking and hosted her friends and family every Sunday for home-cooked meals and fellowship. Above all, Nancy will be remembered as a loving and selfless mother, sister and friend- someone whose kindness was freely given and whose presence brought comfort and warmth. Her legacy lives on in the lives she touched and the love she so generously shared.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Norman John and Lois Bonk Meyer and her brother in law James H. Cox. She is survived by her cherished daughter, Ashley Alverson Handley of Vestavia Hills, Alabama and her dear sister, Marilyn Meyer Cox of Crane Hill, Alabama. She also leaves behind her dear friends Annette Brewer, Sandra Collier, Melodie Taylor and Lynne Thomas who loved her like family and whose faithful support and care brought comfort and peace to her and will forever be remembered with deep appreciation.
For the past year and a half, Nancy faced health issues with remarkable grace, courage and strength. With sincere gratitude, her family thanks the compassionate teams at Brookdale University Park Skilled Nursing and Affinity Hospice for the loving care, compassion and dignity you provided Nancy. Your kindness and devotion brought peace to her and will always be remembered.
A time of visitation will be held at Ridouts Valley Chapel Tuesday, January 20 at 2:00 followed by a celebration of life at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in Nancy’s name to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens or to your favorite charity.
