

Nell Smithson Hawkins, 97, of Birmingham, Alabama, died December 25, 2015. Nell was the daughter of Mayme and Grant Smithson and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Harry Osborne Hawkins. She is survived by her three daughters, Ann Hawkins Luce (Jex) of Mobile; Jane Hawkins Bynum (Joe) of Birmingham; Harriet Hawkins Adams (Carl) of Tuscaloosa; seven grandchildren, Eliza Cooper Pate (Jason); Hayden Luce Scott (John); George Brandon Cooper (Jane Bailey); Crawford Hawkins Hoke; Harriet Luce Alley (Rogers); Caroline Hoke Alexander (Taylor), William Wheeler Hoke, and five great grandchildren, John Paul Scott, IV; Henry Hawkins Scott; Charles Wheeler Scott; Parker Risen Pate, and Mary Ella Alexander. Nell graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She was a member of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church and served on the Altar Guild. She was an avid football fan worthy of a “Roll Tide” mention on these lines. Nell’s family will be forever grateful for the wonderful and loving care given to her by Barbara Thomas; Theresa Evans; Jeannette Tooson; Evelyn Dial; Blendene King and for the compassionate care of Dr. Sara Gould, Dr. Josh Smith, and the staff of the ER and ICU at UAB Hospital Highlands. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Birmingham, AL 35213. A private family service was held at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church on Tuesday, December 29, 2015.
