HOLLAND, PREUIT IRWIN, JR, 91, received his Heavenly reward on June 7, 2018. Preuit was born on January 15, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama to Preuit I. Holland, Sr. and Lona Sockwell Holland. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Jean Peeples Holland and sisters Wanda Holland Foote and Mollie Holland Curlee. Preuit graduated from Woodlawn High School in May 1945 and proudly joined the United States Army, where he was deployed for a two year tour in the Army of Occupation in Leghorn, Italy. After returning home he remained in the Army Reserve, advancing in experience and rank to become
Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics for the 121st Army Reserve Command. Following that tenure he took
command of the 348th Engineer Group. He attended the University of Alabama and was a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Col. Holland was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal,
with oak leaf cluster, and retired from the Army after 35 years of service. He worked 30 years for Southern Natural Gas Company, retiring as Manager of Materials, Specifications and Corrosion Protection Contracts. In his post retirement years he founded Pipeline Consultants, Inc., a corrosion protection inspection firm and headed those operations for 12 years. Preuit was a member of Reserve Officers Association, Retired Officers Association, the Association of the United States Army and the National Association of Corrosion
Engineers. For years Preuit served as an usher at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church and was a long time member of the Trinity Sunday School Class. He was known for his sense of humor and was loved and admired by many! More than anything, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Colonel Holland is survived by his son, Preuit Holland III, Los Angeles, California, and daughter Peggy Holland White, granddaughter Holland White Sherrer (Jeff), grandson Barrett Ross White, great grandsons William Jefferson (Jake) Sherrer, Jr. and Gray Holland Sherrer, great granddaughters Ivy Lucia White and Ava Jane White, all of Birmingham, Alabama. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews and some great stories about all of these family members throughout their lifetimes.
A celebration service will be held in the chapel at Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 12 at 2:00 PM followed by visitation for friends and family in the parlor. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church or a favorite charity.
