

Randolph Caldwell Marks, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 26, at his home on Lake Martin. Marks was the son of Charles Caldwell Marks and Jeanne Alden Vigeant Marks. In his early years he was educated at Indian Springs School where he developed his love of learning and architecture. He attended the University of the South and graduated Cum Laude in 1969 with a double major in English and Physics. He was also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and the Order of Gownsmen, honorary societies and was editor of the Sewanee Purple. Phi Delta Theta was his social fraternity. His love of the domain manifested itself in his design of the Vice Chancellor's home. Following graduation, he attended OCS in Newport, RI, and as an Lieutenant JG in the Navy, he served three years in the NSA working on classified projects. At the completion of his service, he went to Georgia Tech and graduated with a Masters in Architecture. His career focused on luxury residential, light commercial, and Historic Preservation design. In 1969, Marks married his beloved Elizabeth Cox who he met at Lake Martin at the age of 15. He is survived by his wife, Buffie, three sons, Randolph Caldwell Marks, Jr.(Cathy Heitz); William Brooks Marks(Louisa Strain); Cary Bolling Pollard Marks, three grandchildren, Randolph Caldwell Marks, III; Andrew Hastings Marks; and Ann Alden Marks; stepmother, Alice Scott Marks, sister, Margaret Marks Porter( Kip), and brother, Charles Pollard Marks. Randy Marks was an avid photographer and sailor, having crewed on sail boats up and down the east coast. He was happiest marveling at the beauty of nature and sharing it with his family and friends at Lake Martin or in Montana. His thirst for knowledge, understanding of advances in technology, and accompanying appreciation for beauty resulted in many teachable moments that enriched our lives. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's-on-the-Highlands Episcopal Church on Friday, June 30, 2017, at 11:00 AM with visitation to follow in the church parlor.
