Robert Squire Gwin, Jr.

ROBERT W. SQUIRE GWIN, JR. 81, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully at home on July 19, 2025. Born in Bessemer, Alabama, Squire lived a life marked by service, compassion, conviction and an unmistakable sense of humor.

He graduated from Howard College in 1965 and earned his Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law in 1968 where he won the Moot Court Competition. He practiced law with a deep commitment to justice and public service, earning the L. Burton Barnes III Public Service Award and the Jeanne Marie Leslie Service Award.

He was a member of the Birmingham Bar and the Alabama State Bar and was a founding member of ALAP (Alabama Lawyers Assistance Program). He served on the boards of JAFI (Jefferson Alcoholic Foundation, Inc.), Rickwood Field, and the Fellowship House. He was a member of the Birmingham Track Club and was a longtime member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Squire’s real legacy lies in the lives he touched. He was a pillar of the Birmingham recovery community. He was known everywhere for his raspy voice, giant laugh, well-timed candid insights, and the sparkle in his eyes when he told a good story. He had an unmatched ability to make people feel truly seen.

Squire is preceded in death by his parents, Judge Robert W. Gwin and Harriett Wise Gwin, sisters Ann Gwin Keith and Gay Gwin Fowler and his brother, David White Gwin. He is survived by his beloved wife Grace D. Gwin, son Robert W, Gwin III (Trisha), stepson Patrick Duffey (Erin), stepdaughters Kelly Clem Andrews (Dave) and Paige E. Clem (Michael), grandchildren Landon Gwin, Reid Gwin, Mia Gwin, Jackson Burke and Alex Segler and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church 3775 Crosshaven Dr. Vestavia, AL 35223.
