I have fond memories of hearing Roger at St Matthews as well as online . you don't find this type of preaching very often. it was like stepping back in time to hear a preacher like spurgeon who chose his words carefully, brilliantly written and passionate.
But the dearest memory I have was the first time I met him, at a party. He sat on the floor listening to me. We talked about jazz. I didn't think I knew he was a preacher but he preached love to a needful ear.

I vividly recall the first encounter with the delightful Salters.  I was newly wed to my pastor husband, and it was conference time in which Pastor Salter was a guest speaker.  It was expectant intrigue that a Church of England vicar would minister in a Baptist pulpit with which I awaited the arrival of the scheduled speaker…. 
I was not to be disappointed…. His imposing stature and Lewis-like attire belied the quiet, reverent tones with which he poured out his pondering in the Holy Writ.  Such was his reverence and solemn speech, the lilting, musical accents, one found oneself leaning forward literally and figuratively in order to capture every word.

As beneficial as that initial sermon, and all that should follow to my soul, equally beneficial was the delightful friendship that we found in the fellowship of these dear saints as an experienced married couple, pastoral colleagues, and fellow reading enthusiasts.  

I have fond recollection of the privilege of sharing memories, of hearing their stories, and the varied path by which the Lord took them in their many years of service to Him.

While Pastor Salter handled the Word with seriousness and gravity, there are very few people who had quicker wit or could extract humor out of any given situation with such finesse and hilarity.

The warmth and generosity of spirit, the honesty of soul is my most vivid and cherished memory.  My acquaintance with him was comparatively brief, but the impression left will endure a lifetime.

In the short time we knew Roger he was a kind and godly mentor to my husband. We were blessed to spend our last Christmas together with the Salters. My prayers are with Maureen, Alex, Crystal, and all the family. I know they grieve his passing but are joyful at the same time knowing he is with his Savior. I thank God our paths crossed.

Roger was a powerful influence on my life. I attended St. Matthews as a new believer in college and in seminary. While I ultimately became a presbyterian minister, Roger preached my ordination service in 2008. Roger's influence continues to be evident in my life, as I still regularly use the BCP 1662 personally (I still hear Roger's voice when I read parts of it). I aspire to preach the gospel as devotionally as Roger preached. He loved his Savior, and taught me that Jesus was beautiful.

Some of my earliest memories are with Roger. Sitting in his lap while he softly read children’s books to me. He was like a grandfather, a loving presence that I couldn’t quite place as a little girl. He was just Roger- embodying kindness, tweed coats, a scratchy beard, the smell of his pipe, and the biggest heart. His immense love for Maureen and the children is love I hope for in my own life.

My heart goes out to you, Maureen, and the rest of your family. It was my mother's prayerbook received from St. Matthews that led me back to God when my heart wandered in high school. It was Richard Newton's books, recommended by Roger, where I first experienced the riches of church history, and I now read those books to my daughters. I listened to Roger's sermons on Sundays after church through college, inspiring me to keep the faith, reminding me of Christ's wonderful work on the cross, and exhorting me to trust all the more fully in him. 

I still remember our last meeting, on Easter Monday 2019, where he sat down and patiently explained many mysteries of the faith to me at Barnes and Noble. I can firmly say I am studying Divinity at Trinity Anglican Seminary today in part because of his ministry. God bless you all.

Roger was my encourager and friend. It's a rare old-school thing when someone takes time to write a note or an email of thanks, as Roger regularly did. We worried together about the future of Anglicanism in America, and he shared with me resources from his deep and broad studies. I am a blessed man to call Roger a friend in the gospel. We will know each other in the place where Jesus has gone before, perhaps as neighbors.

Roger was a faithful preacher of the Gospel and a dear friend. He suffered many setbacks in life but bore them with grace and fortitude. There are many who owe a great debt to him as their pastor, teacher and friend. May his example shine among us in the days ahead, as we remember him and thank God for his ministry.

I will always have fond memories of a dear brother in Christ whose friendship was warm, sincere, and inviting. I sat under his preaching with great delight to hear of the excellencies of our Lord Jesus Christ. His passing brought a genuine sadness to my heart knowing I would not again, in this world, be blessed by his Christian spirit but I know he is genuinely happy among the spirits of just men made perfect, myriads of angels, and especially the Mediator of the covenant. His race is done. Well done brother - you have helped us by God's grace.

May God uphold you and keep you Maureen in your great loss and bring you comforts which the Spirit of God alone can give.

Roger was in that rare class of humanity who could share the Gospel as well as a pint, both with warmth and sincerity. He influenced me greatly as a minister and as a man.  He humbly but certainly lived out a journey that merited “well done, good and faithful servant” from our Lord. This orb has lost some of its salt and light, but the saints at rest have gained a wonderful brother and friend. I shall look forward to seeing him in the Kingdom!
