Roy Hunt Manly, Jr. died April 16, 2012 at his home in Mountain Brook, AL. He was one of the longest – lived heart transplant recipients in the history of the U. A. B. program (21 years). Recent disabling illnesses finally overcame his valor. His best friend and the light of his life, wife of 55 years, Ann Davis Manly, was constantly by his side. He is also survived by his son, Roy Hunt Manly, III, daughter May Manly Luttrell, son-in-laws Thomas Alex Luttrell and grandsons Malcolm, Davis, and Manly Luttrell. He is also survived by his sister, Betty M. West.
Roy Hunt Manly, Jr. was born in Birmingham on July 8, 1929 to Roy Hunt Manly and Lucille T. Manly who predeceased him. Graduating from West End High School, Roy went on to the University of Alabama where he was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Order. After graduating from the University of Alabama Law School, he then served in the Navy as a legal officer on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Cabot during the Korean Conflict. Roy practiced law for many years with his father at the firm of Manly and Manly.
Many people will remember Roy for his longtime interest in the history of the Shroud of Turin about which he read and studied for many years, and imparted his knowledge and interest to many church groups. For many years, Roy and his family were active members of Grace United Methodist Church where Roy taught Sunday school. In the last few years they have been members of Irondale United Methodist Church where they discovered a new, loving church family.
Known for his gentle humor and disposition, Roy never met a person he did not like, or who did not like him. He continued all though his life to keep up with his old friends from school and the service. In retirement, he enjoyed old friends at the regular Monday barbeque outings. Just a month or so ago, the group met with him for the last time at his home for barbeque, football talk, and laughter. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday April 19th at 11:00 AM at Irondale United Methodist Church, 400 Deering Street, Irondale, AL 35210. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be private for the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Roy Hunt Manly, Jr. may be made to Irondale United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
