On April 1, 2020, Theodore “Ted” Stevenson, Jr., a loving husband and father to one son, passed away at the age of 94. Ted was born on February 12, 1926 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Theodore Stevenson, Sr. and Anna Wesley Stevenson. He was the middle of three siblings, with an older sister Alice and a younger sister Elaine. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
Ted served in the Navy in World War II and the Korean War, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. In the Korean War, Ted was the Gunnery Officer of the USS Doyle in Korea and the Western Pacific. Ted was wounded in action when the Doyle was hit by a North Korean land based artillery shell and was awarded a Purple Heart. The knee injury he received eventually forced him out of military field service.
In 1962 he married Rose Marie Pavlik, and in 1963 the couple had one son, Theodore Stevenson, III. Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marie, and his sister Alice. In 2007, Ted remarried to Frances Adams in Birmingham. Following his military service, Ted worked for U.S. Steel. Ted worked in many of the Pittsburgh steel mills, including Homestead and National Duquesne. In 1967 Ted was transferred to Gary, Indiana, where he was responsible for getting the company’s first continuous caster up and running at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works. In 1978, Ted was transferred to Birmingham, Alabama, where he was general superintendent in charge of Fairfield Works and the Seamless Tubing facility, which was built during his tenure. Ted left U.S. Steel in 1982 to become involved as a principal in a number of smaller steel finishing companies.
Ted will be remembered as a strong family man, a great father and grandfather, an avid golfer, and a gregarious, fun-loving person. He worked hard his whole life to provide opportunities for his family.
Ted is succeeded by his wife Frances, his sister Elaine, his son Ted, numerous nieces and nephews, his stepchildren Lesley Ezell Giles and Riley Justin Ezell, and his grandchildren Katherine Rose Stevenson, Madeline Frances Stevenson, Lauren Elaine Stevenson, Emily Giles, Ashley Giles, Clark Ezell, and Morgan Graham.
Due to the current public health situation, there will not be a funeral. Prior to passing away, Ted expressed his desire to be cremated and the ashes buried at sea. When the public health situation improves, the family intends to hold a memorial at a date and location to be determined to allow Ted’s family and friends to gather and celebrate Ted’s life.
