and Pearl Kennemer, died Nov. 29.
He attended Athens High School and was in the Million Dollar Band and Theta Chi fraternity at the University of Alabama, where he earned a degree in chemistry. He was accepted to the University of Alabama School of Dentisty in Birmingham, where he earned his doctorate of medical dentistry before joining the U.S. Army.
While in the military, he attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City dental graduate school, where he studied orthodontics and earned his MS degree.
After 26 years in the Army, he retired as a colonel and began private practice at dental offices in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. While in private practice, he taught for eight years at UAB’s dental school.
He retired from private practice in 2010.
He was a member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church, the Alabama Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the Alabama Orthodontic Association, the American Association of Orthodontics, the World Federation of Orthodontists and the Retired Officers Association.
He was an associate member of the U.S. Naval Academy alumni.
His first wife was Betty Ann Jones of Birmingham, who died in 1991. Their two children, Suzanne Dent and Kevin Kennemer, survive Dr. Kennemer. He is also survived by the couple’s grandchildren, Blake Dent, Caleb Kennemer, Katie Kennemer and Rachel Dent.
Dr. Kennemer was also married to Elizabeth (Bettye) Crawford, who predeceased him. His stepchildren include Alexandria Orcutt (deceased) and Meredith Carmichael. His stepgrandchildren include Betsy French and Jack Orcutt. His stepgreatgrandchildren include Alexandria French, Sally French, Lizzie French, Virginia French and Leila Orcutt.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Valley Chapel Homewood with private graveside services afterward.
