

He was a graduate of Woodlawn High School, Birmingham Southern College, and received his Masters from Peabody College in Nashville, TN. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1952 for four years, retiring with the Rank of Captain from the Reserve Program in 1983. He was a Geometry teacher, and coach, from 1956 – 1966 at Shades Valley High School. Jefferson County Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Director of Education and Health Services, 1967 – 1987. Executive Director of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, 1985 – 2009.
He was a member of the Woodlawn High School Hall of Fame, Birmingham Southern Sports Hall of Fame, Alabama High School Coaches Hall of Fame, and State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. He was active in the Monday Morning Quarterback Club, Birmingham Kiwanis Cub, Board Member of the Boys and Girls Club of Central Alabama, and the Bryant Jordan Student Athlete Scholarship Program, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham.
William Legg spent his life coaching, teaching, as well as influencing the lives of so many people. A selfless man who cared deeply for his family and friends. He went on to become a well- respected educator and coach in the state of Alabama. He dedicated his time to the Sports of Hall of Fame, and anyone who knew him, understood how much he loved and believed in the work he was doing.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years Jimmy Legg of Birmingham; daughter Leigh Ellen Osborn, and two sons William Murray Legg, James Edward Legg, 17 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 17th, 2015 from 5 PM until 7 PM at Ridout’s Homewood Chapel. Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 18th, 2 PM, at First United Methodist Church of Birmingham.
