

Carroll Phillips died September 11, 2012 at home in Homosassa Florida after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 86 years old. He was born in Beaumont, Texas on August 13, 1926. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. Once the war ended, he returned to Beaumont where he graduated from Lamar College. He then moved to Los Angeles to attend the Northrop Institute of Technology so that he could pursue his dream of being an aeronautical engineer. After graduating, he began his career at Northrop.
He married Barbara Bond in 1950 and lived in Palos Verdes, California where their two daughters, Linda Lee and Teri Ann where born. During the 12 years at Northrop, he was a design engineer working on the intercontinental SNARK missile and led a design team that created a new launching system.
In 1961, he accepted a position with Raytheon Company and moved the family to New England. In 1964, his son Douglas Bond was born. Carroll and Barbara lived in Weston, MA during the 30 years he worked at Raytheon. During this period, he held engineering and management positions at Raytheon and was influential in the design of rotating radar bases, the Hawk missile system, towable boxed missile launching systems, the Evolved Sea Sparrow missile surface-to-air portable launching system and the Patriot missile. He also reconfigured guidance radars so they could be installed on luxury ships.
In 1991, he retired and moved to Homosassa, Florida where Barbara & Carroll would live the rest of their lives in a home they designed in Sugarmill Woods. A few years after his wife Barbara passed away in 2007, his daughter Teri and son-in-law Fred moved into the Homosassa house to help care for him.
Carroll was predeceased by his wife Barbara Bond of 57 years and leaves behind two daughters; Linda and her husband Russell Rabinowitz of Raleigh, NC and Teri and husband Fred Learned formally of Ft. Myers now residing Homosassa, FL and son Doug and his wife Leslie (Farrar) of Acton, MA and six grandchildren: LTJG Andrew (US Navy) and Kelly Learned; Daniel and Allyssa Rabinowitz; and Matthew and Kristen Phillips.
There will be a memorial gathering at 1:30 pm followed by a 2:00 pm service on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Wilder Funeral Home, 4890 South Suncoast Blvd., Homosassa Springs, FL.
