

Akira Steven “Steve” Doi, 96, passed away at home on May 2, 2025 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born in Stockton, California on December 3, 1928 to Gohachi & Fukuyo Doi. Steve was a loving father, companion, grandparent and friend. He was a Korean War era U.S. Army veteran, Art Director, Medical Illustrator, avid videographer, and photographer. Steve’s hobbies included spearfishing, ballroom dancing, running, painting, ceramics, computer programming, and dining out. He was preceded in Death by: (Half brother) Goichi Doi, (Sister) Violet Y. Mori, (Brother) Richard T. Doi, and (Sister) May S. Muroga.He is survived by: (Son) Ken K. Doi and his wife Christina, (Daughter) Claire E. Doi, (Son) Garret S. Doi, and (Grandson) Jordan F. Doi. A memorial service will be held at the Borthwick Mortuary Mauka Chapel, 1330 Maunakea Street on Sunday June 1, 2025 at 11:00 AM. Parking entrance is on Kukui Street. Aloha attire. The family requests that donations be made to Lanakila Meals on Wheels in lieu of flowers.
Steve attended Rohwer Center High School, (Freshman & Sophomore years) located at the Rohwer Relocation Center in Desha County, Arkansas (Japanese American Internment Camp) built to house Japanese Americans from the West Coast during World War II. He graduated from Stockton High School, (Junior & Senior years) Stockton, CA, before studying at Stockton Junior College obtaining an Associate in Arts degree. Steve was awarded a Degree of Bachelor of Applied Arts, from California College of Arts and Crafts. He also earned a Degree of Bachelor of Professional Arts in Advertising Design from Art Center College of Design.
Steve was the Art Director for Honolulu television/ radio stations, KHVH, KGMB, and KITV. He was last employed by WP Photographic Services/ Tripler AMC as a Medical Illustrator. Steve was known to be hardworking, and conscientious with a “can do” attitude. Honolulu is a place he has called home for sixty one years.
