Dear Norman and ohana, it is now July 15, 2014 and we just heard of Cecelia's passing.  Our heart felt sympathy to you and your family.  I have never forgotten Cecelia's welcoming of her Florida family and the love and kindness she showed to Wailana (also Ceis' sister) and to me so many years ago.  God bless the beautiful memories of a wonderful lady.  Our heartfelt sympathy and love goes to you and your family.

Dr Lawler explained a lot of things to us when we visited her.  I recall her saying that when you first visited her about 13 years ago, your heart was only pumping at 15%.  She said normally, that meant a really short timer, 2 years tops.  She was impressed that you stayed with us for so long.  She says it was your will to live and the love from your husband, children and grandchildren that kept you going.   A lot of wonderful things happened in those 13 years.  You and dad got to travel to China, travel to Phoenix and Kauai to watch Nanea, Kanani and Pili play volleyball, go on a boat cruise and spend a lot of precious time with your grand- daughters.   They all have very fond memories of staying over at gramma and grampa's house.  When we came to pick up the girls, we could hear everyone laughing and screaming in the house before we parked the car.  We knew you all were having a good time.
I just wanted to share some of my thoughts as I reflect on your final days.  I was devastated to learn that you decided to go to hospice when I arrived in San Diego.  Maka sent me a picture of you, her and Nanea in your hospice room.  Your face was glowing with a big smile, something I hadn't seen in quite a while.   It seemed that you were at peace with your decision.  When I got home and went to see you, you were cheerful and happy.  Friends and family were visiting you.  It almost seemed like you were too healthy to be there.  I also was pleasantly surprised to see you had an appetite to eat all the “naughty” foods you couldn't eat for years.  When you asked for poke, I went to Tamura's to get you some good stuff.  It was funny when I was giving you all the small pieces and you told me “Where's the big pieces?”   Dad brought you fried rice, Portuguese sausage, corn beef hash, Chinese food, dim sum and sweet sour spare ribs.  He also brought you Hawaiian food without the salt restrictions.  It was good to see you so happy and content.  
After you passed, I gathered my thoughts on how your final weeks went.  I am truly impressed with your decision to go to hospice, to take control of the situation and make the final days your own.   Your bravery and dignity is truly inspirational.  We will all miss you mom.

Dear Norman.
Ceis was one of my best friends in school. I felt a real kinship with her. Enjoyed many times with her and her family as they introduced me to Hawaiian cooking. I am greatly saddened by the news of her passing.

My deepest sympathy to Norman and his children and grandchildren.  The loss of Cecelia is heart wrenching to say the least.  Not everyone gets to have a dear friend for over 60 years.  We had some wonderful times together and even though we ended up oceans apart she will always have a special place in my heart.  I will miss her so much.

Cecelia's Eulogy by Norman Lum
•Cecelia Kalahoano Waiwaiole was born to Cecelia Mililani Kahikina & Benjamin Louis Waiwaiole on August 7, 1938 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Cecelia never met her birth mother.
•In 1944, Cecelia moved to California to be with her dad where she joined her 2nd family.  Brother Lono and sister Healani were born.
•She joined her 3rd family in 1950 where brother Lloyd and Nalani were born.
•Norman & Cecelia met in 1956 in Seattle where she was a senior at West Seattle High School.  Cecelia asked Norman to her Senior Prom.   WOW what a shock, Norman was the only Oriental Black Haired among the blondes.  He was the stranger from the U.S. Coast Guard amongst them. . (MAKA: Couple days before grandma passing, I showed her my own prom picture, she smiled and laughed when she saw my dress.  She then stated, “Guess what? I wore the same color of green to my & grandpa's prom. Except it had white polka dots”.  I was amazed that my Grandma had the same taste in a dress just as I did)
•After graduation, Cecelia went to work for Boeing Aircraft as a Stenographer with their flight test section
•Upon announcement of our Wedding in the Seattle Post Intelligence Newspaper, Norman's cousin Quonnie Wong Goo's  husband, Abe Goo, who was her Big, Big boss, walked over to her desk, everyone was staring at them.  He says “Hi cousin” and shows her the newspaper.  At that point there was a silent hush before the up roar in the steno pool.  Abe went on to become President of the Boeing Airplane Company.
•On June 28, 1958, they had a wedding at West Seattle Congregational Church.  It was a Big Luau with the Imu on the front lawn of the church and the party in the social hall
•Returning to Hawaii in 1958 for the first time in 14 years, Cecelia did not know pigeon, it was  a cultural shock.  Cecelia Looked local, but talked like a haole.
•First job in Hawaii was with Certified Groceries until her first child was born
oBrett Kealii Lum was born in June 1960.  
oRobert Ikaika Lum was born in March 1962.
oDale Thomas Lum was born in March 1967.
oAnnette Sharon Lum was born in March 1969.  
•After the children were older Cecelia would do Christmas gift wrapping at Liberty House and would socialize with her many friends
•From there, she found out McInerny Store was starting the Kron chocolate covered strawberries, orange and apple wedges.  She found her way into learning to do these delicious treats.  Needless to say, we enjoyed her experiments at home as she perfected her techniques
•In 1960 Norman started up “Components Incorporated”.  They were awarded the Wilson Art line of laminated plastic.  A new company National Laminates was born to distribute the “Number 2” line of laminated plastic (Formica was #1).  Cecelia helped start this product off as their Architectural Representative to have this new product specified in design projects at Architectural firms, Contractors, Cabinet fabricators & Mill work shops in town.
•Cecelia had to learn to speak in front on small and large groups.  She took “Dale Carnegie” courses to gain confidence & improve her sales skills. 
•She was also actively involved with the Toast Mistress Club and was President of the Local chapter
•Cecelia joined the Koganji  Church became a member of their Goeka Choir, traveled with them to Japan to visit temples and even went to an Onsen (Public Bath house). Cecelia went with petite oriental ladies into the Onsen to take their bath then into the pool.  She tried to be at the back of the group, but she was in front with the Mama San handing out the bath towels.  She tells Mama San I need the big towel, Mama san smiles and tell her to put the towel on top her head and with all her friends are hiding behind.  That must have been a really interesting experience for everyone.
•In July of 1997, Cecelia became a Grandma.  Tommy & Kina'u had a healthy baby girl, Makamae.  A year later, Annette and Barry delivered the second grandchild, Kanani, then came Nanea & Pili.  All girls!!!  Grandma spoiled each and every one of them.  She enjoyed their company and especially loved playing board games, such as Hanafuda, Majong, Cribbage & Poker.
•Every holiday, especially Christmas & Easter, grandma Cecelia made sure each of her children, grandchildren and even son/daughter in law, received a Chinese Licee envelope from her & grandpa 
•Gramma and Grampa went on a China trip to Shanghai Bejing-Xian.  They got to experience Chinese culture and traditional foods.  They were surprised at how bland the traditional foods tasted.  
•Cecelia was always looking for new experiences and eventually joined Eckancar, she really enjoyed this experience and as her final wish, asked to have Cynthia Chock share her wishes with us today.
•Grandma made the best Lime Snow dessert (recipe from Aunty Pinky) and her famous Candied Pineapple Yam Dish
•Grandma will be remembered for her laughter, her wisdom, playing board games, her penciled eye-brows, her closet full of shoes & handbags, her childhood memory stories and her Aloha to everyone who knew her 
•We all miss you.

Aloha Lum Ohana,

  Just know that Mom is at peace and smiling over all of us.  I always remember seeing her smiling which instantly put a smile on my face.   All of your ancestors are with her as well as my Mom and Dad so she is in good hands... : )  Everyone is unique and we all grieve in our own way so dont worry family and friends are a phone call away plus there is a new angel up above and she is watching over all of you... I was told a long long time ago that my Dad (Uncle Bobo or Uncle Al) was the one that brought Uncle Norman and Aunty Sissy together...  : ) The Lum's of 8th Avenue... or is it the Lums of Kilauea Avenue...  No matter because you wont find better people or a better Ohana.  My heart and my prayers are with all of you as we CELEBRATE MOM;S LIFE ! ! !  When you find peace in Mom's passing, she will be happier...

I have worked with Tom (Dale) Lum over the past couple years and know that Cecila must have been very special... as Tom has been an absolute pleasure to work with and possesses exceptional character. Regret to hear of Kalahoano's passing. Never had the chance to meet her as an adult, but remember vividly her and  Norman's visits to our Palama home, especially the day baby Brett fell off the porch, and the blue kitchen table Norman made for us. I know auntie Ceis will be missed as much as Marilyn is. They were both amazing women. Together again in heaven forever loving all of us. Ceis was a blessing to know. Love to all of you from Ohana Alefaio.

Dear Norm and Family, I looked this morning at all the photos of our dear Cecelia. Brought many tears to my eyes. Remember, I have known her a lot longer than any of you did. I recall our school days and all the fun we had. She had such an adorable sense of humor. She was just plain fun. My great regrets to all of you. You were so lucky to have her in your lives.
