She was born October 20, 1947 to Marie K Beckley and Charles L. Kuheana – Kaumualii. She was raised in a large Hawaiian family with her three brothers (Joseph, Charles and George) and three sisters (Charlotte, Charla Mae and Charlaneller). She proudly graduated from Farrington High School before going to a communications course where she became a PBX operator for the Marine Surf Hotel in downtown Waikiki and at the Town & Country Hotel in San Diego, California. On December 28, 1971 she married the love of her life Lemuel Melvin Batten (deceased March 2002) and had two children, Lemuel Kahapula Batten and Kaliko Lehua Herrod. She was a dedicated wife, mother, sister and friend.
Her interests were many and the time she dedicated was truly from her heart. She enjoyed being a part of many organizations such as the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, Gold Star Wives of America, the Hui O Hawaii of San Diego, Elks Lodge, Sonny Ching's Halau Nā Mamo O Pu'uanahulu, and many others. She was a firm believer in sharing and embracing the Hawaiian culture which she expressed in songs, hula and history. She was easily recognized for her elaborate muu muu collection, haku’s, her ukulele and singing and of course her warm and welcoming hugs with a smile. Hawaiian ancestry was her forte. She loved to find extended family and could do so just by a last name in which she could tell you members of your family and what island they originated and how you were related to her. She spent 20 years as a Navy wife and many more years as a Navy mother as her two children also enlisted.
Charletta is survived by her two children - Lemuel Kahapula Batten with his wife Misako; Kaliko Lehua Herrod and her husband Ryan; 9 Grandchildren; Jeffrey, Malyssa, and Joseph (Batten): and Koda, Lyle, Kora, Kristopher, Kaiya and Ka'inoa (Herrod); 3 Great-grandchildren – Ezekial, Kalv’ne, and Takoda (Herrod); Brother - George “Boy” Kuheana and his wife Patricia; Sister – Charlotte Roberts and her husband James. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and acquaintances.
