Born on April 9, 1926 to Fukutaro and Motoyo Uyemuki on the Big Island in the little village of Koae/Kapoho. Clara graduated from Hilo High School in 1943 and worked as a switchboard operator at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel where she met her future husband Robert (Bob) Fry who was a CTC (Cryptologic Technician Chief Petty Officer) in the U.S. Navy. She and Bob moved from Hilo to Honolulu permanently in 1955. After serving over twenty years in the Office of Personnel Management at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Clara retired in 1985.
Clara loved gardening, sewing, collecting stamps and coins, taking trips to Las Vegas and Reno, and playing hanafuda, solitaire and cribbage. But her true love and passion was her family. She was married to husband Bob for 48 years before he passed in 1993, she raised three healthy happy children, and actively helped raise all of her eleven grandchildren. Her “genki” personality was infectious and her friends and family will be forever shaped by her love, warmth and perseverance for generations to come.
A short private ceremony will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific on Friday March 6 at 11:30am.
