Douglas Sadao Furuto, 91 years old of Honolulu passed away peacefully at his home in Papakolea surrounded by his loved ones on Monday May 19, 2025. He was a retired Chief Wharf Clerk at Matson Shipping Yard in Honolulu, where he dedicated many years overseeing cargo operations, keeping the docks organized, and making sure everything ran efficiently and by the book. He earned the respect of his coworkers through discipline, leadership, and a deep knowledge of the job.
A loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, treasured great-grandfather, and proud great-great-grandfather. He lived a long and meaningful life marked by kindness, wisdom and unwavering love for his family. His legacy is not just in the number of lives he touched, but in the strength, honesty, and discipline he instilled in all of us.
He lived through tough times and never complained. He didn’t believe in shortcuts or handouts. What he did believe in was hard work, personal responsibility, and showing up when it mattered most.
He raised his family with firm hands and a clear sense of right and wrong. He wasn't one for small talk, but when he spoke, people listened. His advice might have been blunt, but it was always honest—and usually right. He taught us how to stand tall, work hard, and take care of our own.
He is survived by his wife Kalipo, daughters Vernette Kahanaoi (Joe), Maydell Werner (Kalei), TerryLynn Simeona (Troy), Lorie Ann Kamai (Louis), and Tanya Furuto (Aaron), sisters Janet and Iris Ann, and brother Rodney, 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Borthwick Mortuary
Friday, June 13th at 11:30 AM
Saturday, June 14th at 10:00 AM
Burial to follow at 2:00 PM at Hawaiian Memorial Park.
He was a strong man, and he left this world the same way he lived in it—on his own terms.
