George Lononuiakea Naukana Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather, brother, mentor, coach, educator, and proud son of Hawaiʻi, passed away peacefully at home on April 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was 88 years old.
George was born on April 18, 1938, to George Lononuiakea Naukana Sr. and Elsie Franco. He lived a life rooted in family, discipline, service, and aloha. From an early age, George demonstrated the strength, determination, and quiet leadership that would define his life. As a young athlete at Roosevelt High School, he earned recognition as a standout football player and helped represent the proud tradition of Hawaiʻi high school athletics. His athletic gifts continued beyond high school, including his time connected to Boise Junior College, where he was recognized for his strength and accomplishments in track and field.
On August 9, 1958, George married the love of his life, Barbara Jill Stevenson, in an intimate ceremony in Mānoa Valley. Their marriage became a beautiful example of love, devotion, loyalty, and partnership. Together, George and Barbara built a life centered around family and raised four children: DeeEtte Naukana, Robin Naukana Cazinha, Robert Naukana, and Malia Naukana.
George’s greatest legacy was not only in the records he set or the games he coached, but in the lives he shaped. He dedicated much of his life to education, coaching, and mentoring young people. As a football coach at Kaimuki High School and later at Kamehameha Schools, George taught far more than the game. He taught discipline, pride, teamwork, humility, accountability, and perseverance. To many of his students and athletes, he was not simply “Coach Naukana”; he was a steady example of what it meant to lead with strength and heart.
His years of service with Kamehameha Schools reflected his deep commitment to education, culture, and the future of Hawaiʻi’s children. George believed in developing young people not only as students and athletes, but as responsible, grounded, and respectful individuals. His influence lives on through generations of students, players, colleagues, friends, and family members who were blessed to know him.
At home, George was deeply loved. He was a source of wisdom, protection, humor, and strength for his family. He carried his name and heritage with dignity, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and quiet excellence. His presence filled a room, his guidance shaped lives, and his memory will remain a treasured part of his family’s story.
George is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Jill (Stevenson) Naukana; his children, DeeEtte Naukana (Debra Mojta), Robert Naukana, and Malia Naukana (Elias Agcalon); his grandchildren, Blaine Cazinha, Brent (Yuki Cazinha), Bailey Cazinha, Breanna Cazinha, Reece Naukana-Christensen, Heath Naukana-Christensen, and Emma Naukana-Christensen; his great grandchildren, Madison Cazinha and Allison Cazinha; and his sister, Josephine (Naukana) Infiesto.
George was preceded in death by his father, George Lononuiakea Naukana Sr.; his mother, Elsie Franco; his beloved daughter, Robin Naukana Cazinha; and his grandson, Brandon Cazinha (Tiffany Perng).
George’s family gives thanks for the love, prayers, and support offered during this time. His life was a blessing, his memory is a gift, and his legacy will continue through all who carry forward the lessons he taught. Though he is reunited with his daughter Robin, his grandson Brandon, and his parents, his love remains forever with those who continue to honor his life and memory.
Me ke aloha pau ʻole — with everlasting love.
