Our beautiful mother, Lam Mui, of Honolulu passed away on March 10, 2026. She was born in Songfu Village, Changjiang, East District, Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, China. She immigrated to Honolulu with her young family in 1967 via family sponsorship and eventually became a naturalized U.S. citizen. She lived to the physical age of 98 years.
She worked as a master seamstress in China and Hong Kong before moving to Honolulu. During the 1970s she worked as a seamstress for several local companies during the day and worked at Tasty Chop Suey in the old Holiday Mart on Kaheka Street during the evenings. She always reminded her children of working over twelve hours a day to put food on the table and to save money. She also instilled in her children the importance of higher education before starting their own family. In the 1980s, upon the advice of a family friend, she applied and worked as a custodian for the state of Hawaii Department of Education, working at the School for the Deaf and Blind and later at Kaimuki Intermediate (Middle) School until her retirement in the early 1990s. She later traveled the world on cruises and enjoyed visiting family and friends on the mainland and China.
