Our Dad, Michaelson Hon Wai Young, passed away at the age of 88 and is survived by his wife, two children and their families: Ida; Gabriel (daughters Yasmine and Alyssa); Stacie Young Smith (husband John and daughter Payton). Dad had 2 brothers and 2 sisters and their loving families: Harvey and Ginny Young, Helen and Roy Chang, Hon Ing (deceased) and Yin Chun Young, and Rose Low (deceased) and Gilbert Low.
Dad was born on 17 November 1937 to Bow Lin Young and Wah Kwong Young in Buk Toy Village in Zhongshan, China. He and his siblings moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to join their father. Dad was the second youngest of the five siblings. He was a proud graduate of Farrington High School, Class of 1957 and served two years in the Navy upon graduating. In his younger years, he enjoyed boxing and was known for his mischievous spirit. His playful antics eventually led him to spend a short time living with his eldest sister and her family on the Big Island. After returning from the Big Island, he settled down and married Ida Wong in 1971. His youthful energy shifted toward building a family and a career. He worked at Johnston Atoll for a short time. Dad was a skilled plumber who eventually retired from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard as a Pipefitter, dedicating many years to his trade. Throughout his life, he loved to watch any sporting event, especially boxing and football. He did not have a favorite team—he simply enjoyed watching for the love of sport.
Dad was not a very affectionate man and showed his love by being a great provider to his family. His dedication and quiet strength taught us the value of hard work and loyalty. We carry his lessons with us every day, and his legacy lives on in how we care for one another and strive to do our best. The memories of his laughter, resilience, and unwavering support will forever remain in our hearts. We miss you deeply and love you, Dad.
