Kobuke sensei was my Japanese school teacher many many years ago in Palolo.  I did enjoy her classes and I do remember what she told  told us of her experience in Hiroshima during the war, especially the "hinomaru  bento". I was young and that really made an impression on me. Shortly after college I returned from a job training trip on the mainland. It was was a very late flight and I was in the airport terminal waiting for my parents to pick me up. I was a little uncomfortable.It was so late, there literally was no one else in the terminal that I could see. I don't know where she came from but sensei recognized me those many years after she taught me and stayed with me until my parents came. I was so relieved and grateful that she was there for me. She really was the ultimate teacher, strict , caring and kind. I've told my children about her. I will always remember her kindness and how she made me feel. Thank you sensei.....L. Torikawa Pate

I met Jean nearly 20 years ago while engaging in a door-to-door ministry and called on her often over the years.  Although of a different faith, she was always warm and gracious.  Jean loved life and marveled at the universe around her, especially enjoying the view from her balcony which she called the "sky stage". Jean was interested in everything and everyone.  She loved to travel and carefully documented her trips in scrapbooks.  Jean was always up for an excursion.  Skilled at the sewing machine, she spent many hours creating household items out of donated fabrics for sale at fundraisers.  She called this "making the fabric come alive".   Her life was long and well lived and she will be missed.

Jean was a beloved neighbor and wonderful friend for so many years.  My mother Monica Brill thought of her as such a dear one and was very close to her.  Whenever I came home to Hawaii we would get together and she was the sweetest happiest soul.  We would walk to the beach, which was a rather long walk, and then swim at San Souci Beach.  Jean always would encourage us to get into the chilly water by saying "We are fish not chickens!"
She was always laughing and loved to share the scrapbooks of her many trips.  She will be missed and remembered with love.   Deborah Power
