

CW4 Edwin S. Deaver, US Army- Retired, 83, passed away on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 after an illness. Mr. Deaver was also a 7 term mayor of Hope Mills, NC. He served as the current commissioner until his passing. He was preceded in death by his father, Kellis E. Deaver Sr., mother, Alice Mckinnon Deaver, brother, Kellis E. Deaver Jr., brother Donovan M. Deaver Sr., and nephew Larry K. Deaver.
He graduated from Hope Mills High School in 1951. He was employed at Ft. Bragg, 11 Sep. 1957 in military personnel until he entered the U.S. Army in 1954, with the 101st Division at Ft. Jackson SC, then to Ft. Gordon GA, and shortly to Hollenberg, Germany assigned to Army Security Agency, where he remained until released from active duty. He was immediately assigned to the U.S. Army reserve command service & support school for two years at Ft. Bragg NC, then following assignment to 108th Division BN at Ft. Bragg, 300th SF Ret, 13th SFG (div) Ft Bragg, NC and 11th SF Group (DIV) Ft. Bragg, NC . He served a total of 14 years with Special Forces, 108th Division Brigade and Division HQ COL (Chief of Logistics) and 519 MI Battalion, Ft. Bragg, NC for two years. MI (Military Intelligence) School, Ft. Bragg, NC for 7 years. Decorations include FOL, Overseas Service Ribbon, the Army Achievement Medal and Meritorious Service Medal and various awards. He retired in December of 1988 after 39 years of service.
He enjoyed volunteering was a life time member of Cumberland United Methodist Church, worked with N.C. Senior Tar Heel Legislature, the Mid-Carolina Council of Governments, Bragg Mutual Federal Credit Union, the Retired Officers Association, the Reserve Officers Association, the steering committee of the National Human Development Committee National League of Cities and the Cape Fear River Assembly. He was a member of the Cumberland Council of Older Adults board of directors, the Rotary Club of Fayetteville, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10630, Cumberland County Community Action Program, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Transportation Advisory Committee of the Fayetteville area, the Cumberland County Mayor’s Coalition, a member of U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre’s Military Affairs Council and was an honorary commander of Pope Air Force Base. Due to his exceptional public service he was awarded, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine on September 1, 2005.
Left to cherish his memories are sister JoAnn Deaver Beasley and husband Gary, nephew Edwin G. “Eddie” Beasley, nephew Kurt Deaver and wife Susan, nephew Mitch Deaver and wife Robin, niece Denise Young, husband Steve, niece Linda MacDonald, husband (Dan) and sister in- law Agnes Deaver.
Visitation will be held on Friday December 16, 2016 at Cumberland United Methodist Church from 6-8 pm.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 17th, 2016 at Cumberland United Methodist Church conducted by, Dr. Chang Kim and Reverend Tom Hayes.
He will be laid to rest in the family plot at Gillmont Cemetery with full military honors.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Hope Mills Fire Department, Police Department, and Hope Mills Town Officials.
In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to Cumberland united Methodist church, The American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
